SAFETY / ETIQUETTE / CODE OF CONDUCT / RIGHT TO ROAM
Before setting off on your travels to find these amazing sites,
it is worth having some things in order:
Plan your route well before setting off
Know where you will be able to park
Make sure you have a map and compass
Do not rely solely on a mobile devices for navigation
Wear appropriate attire; particularly walking shoes/boots
Take a torch
Take food and drink
Be careful of wild and non-wild animals; particularly cows...
they are not always as friendly as they look, believe me!
Take care in general and know your limits. Some stones can be quite tricky to get to,
and if the weather is bad, this can make it all the more difficult as well.
Many who visit these sites can accidentally cause damage. This is obviously the furthest thing from their minds, but it is easy to be unaware of certain things that can do harm.
PLEASE DO NOT:
Climb on the stones
Remove lichen/moss from the stones
Use candles
Light fires
Fly drones without permission
Mark the stones with pebbles, put coins within them or tie ribbon on to them
Attempt to move any stones or change anything about the surrounding site
Please ask for permission to visit any sites that are on private land. Access is generally given and these sites are often as important to the landowners as us. However, if visits are repeatedly undertaken unauthorised, it can lead to denied access for everyone.
Also, don't hog the site! We all know spending time on your own with these sites is a beautiful experience, so it is only fair to let everyone have that opportunity.
More often than not, people have travelled quite far to visit them as well.
